Your Water Bill is No Match for These 3 Money-Saving Tips

Save Money

If you live in Woodland, CA, then you might be facing water shortages and high prices on your water bill because of drought, fires, and fracking.

Many Californians are already abstaining from using too much water to avoid expensive monthly bills and also help preserve the lakes and streams that are left, which, fortunately, is one great way to save a great deal of money on your water.

There are also some very simple, effective ways to fight back against the high cost of water that you may not know about it.

1 - Fix Faulty Dripping Fixtures Immediately

Water LeakIt is a big mistake to think that leaking faucets don’t matter. One continually dripping faucet can have you paying for an extra 3000 gallons a year.

This can add hundreds of dollars to your water bill. Never let a faucet drip for long. If it needs to be replaced, the investment in a plumber and good fixture should pay for itself completely within a month.

2 - Stop Washing Your Car on Your Lawn

Car WashFor best results completely disconnect your outdoor garden hose from the faucet and simply don’t use it unless it is necessary. It is simply a huge waste of water to try to keep lawn sod green in a climate that likes to fry grass. Try growing cactus or wildflowers that don’t need much water instead.

Washing your car also uses hundreds of gallons of water that you will end up paying for, and you are better off to simply take the vehicle to the local drive-through car wash and have it cleaned there. Why spend a hundred dollars to wash your car in your driveway, when the automatic car wash costs between ten and twenty bucks to use?

3 - Install Hoses to Recycle Your Greywater

Water PlantsGreywater, the water left over from washing, should never have to swirl down the drain. Recycle your washing water from your dishwasher and laundry by using it on your lawn and your garden.

A skilled plumber can hook up your appliances so that the wastewater is funneled through a hose into your garden. This not only saves you from paying hundreds of dollars but just to water your lawn, it is also good for the environment because the greywater does not end up in streams, river, and the ocean.

Finally, remember that it is very important to have your plumbing and entire HVAC system inspected to make sure that pipes and other connections are not collecting condensed water or leaking. A failure to do so could be very costly, especially if a faulty pipe bursts or a big valve malfunctions and gives you cause to pay hundreds of dollars for the cleanup of a flooded basement or the reinforcement of a sodden house foundation.

You may not be able to detect these types of water leaks yourself, but you shouldn’t ignore them because every drop of water is eventually going to add up to be another dollar on your utility bill.
